Get Georgia Moving Coalition
Applauds Lt. Governor and Senate Leaders
For Introducing Transportation Funding Legislation

ATLANTA – The Get Georgia Moving Coalition, which represents more than 50 groups across Georgia, today applauded Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle and Senate leaders for introducing transportation funding legislation.

“Today the Lt. Governor and members of the Senate introduced a plan that would allow the voters of Georgia to decide if they would like to have the opportunity to build and maintain new transportation projects,” said Charles Tarbutton, assistant vice president of Sandersville Railroad Company, chair of the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and co-chair of the Get Georgia Moving Coalition. “This development is a huge step forward in the transportation funding debate, and we expect the House of Representatives to take action on transportation in the coming days.”

Get Georgia Moving is a diverse group of business leaders, state and local government leaders, transit advocates, road builders and environmentalists. The coalition includes the Georgia Chamber of Commerce, the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, the Regional Business Coalition, the Atlanta Regional Commission, the Association County Commissioners of Georgia, the Georgia Transit Association, the Georgia Highway Contractors Association, Georgians for Better Transportation, the Georgia Conservancy and others. A list is below.

“Now state leaders can dig in and find a consensus transportation solution that is good for the citizens of this state and can be embraced by the House, the Senate and the Governor,” said Joe Leonard, chairman of AirTran Airways, chairman of the transportation policy committee of the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce and co-chair of the Get Georgia Moving Coalition. “As the Lt. Governor said, transportation cuts across party lines, regional lines and other boundaries -- and affects us all. Today’s action by the Senate is a positive step forward in working together to bring relief to the citizens of Georgia.”

The Get Georgia Moving coalition supports an approach that would allow citizens in regions across Georgia to vote on a new sales tax funding mechanism to relieve congestion and promote economic development.

The coalition also supports efforts to optimize current revenue sources, invest in transit and transportation options and support innovative funding programs.
